The Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice in Fine and Performing Arts
Project concept:
We decided to contribute to the project EUROFABRIQUE 2 with a historical and artistic journey on the theme of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Starting from a suggestion that emerged from the topics discussed in this edition of EUROFABRIQUE, we decided to work on the parallelism between Eurydice / Europe and Orpheus / Us. Following the Florentine tradition of studies in the history of spectacle, our historical-philological approach to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice will provide a basis and a support for the elaboration of the group 3 project, with the aim of giving some ideas, visual suggestions and a scientific background in view of the workshop in December. Starting from some of the proposed issues (Eurydice is the Europe we love. We are Orpheus. Europe-Eurydice is in Hell. What is Hell for us? We have to go and bring Europe-Eurydice back. How can we do this?), one possible answer can be found in the reading of the past as a key to interpret the present for the construction of a better future. In this perspective, our work focuses mainly on iconography and two of the many plays that have been inspired by the myth from the 17th century to the present day: Orpheus und Eurydike by Pina Bausch (1975) and Orphée et Eurydice by Romeo Castellucci (2014).
