Fundação Bienal de Arte de Cerveira

Vila Nova de Cerveira is a Portuguese village located in the Alto Minho sub-region, belonging to the North region and the district of Viana do Castelo. By investing in art, culture and creativity as distinctive elements, Vila Nova de Cerveira has maintained a healthy and balanced relationship between cultural tradition and contemporary creation over the years. This symbolic capital has favoured the development of a distinctive signature – the Village of Arts – which originated from hosting the oldest art biennial in the country, the Cerveira International Art Biennial (1978). Over the last four decades, this town situated in the Alto Minho region has been a meeting point for Portuguese and foreign artists, offering exceptional space and conditions for the event.

To maintain the quality and innovation of the Cerveira International Art Biennial, it became essential to renew it and raise alternative financial resources. In 2010, the Cerveira Art Biennial Foundation was recognised as an instrument for creating the right conditions for the professionalisation and consolidation of this cultural and creative project.

FBAC’s aim is to “promote contemporary artistic creation as a factor in the empowerment of citizens and the territory”. Through the organisation of international art biennials, the study, preservation and dissemination of its collection, the permanent promotion of education and cultural mediation activities, the promotion of artistic experimentation activities and regular cultural programming and networking, the FBAC aims to establish itself as an international platform for the exhibition and dissemination of contemporary plastic and visual artistic creation, providing an inclusive, accessible and participatory experience for all visitors, while at the same time being a space for meeting, sharing, dialogue and training between artists, cultural programmers and audiences.
