The West University of Timișoara – Faculty of Arts and Design
In 1990, the Faculty of Arts was re-established in Timișoara, after a period of 11 years during which its functioning had been interrupted. The higher art education was to become part of the West University, an institution with a strong humanistic tradition. Immediately after the 1989 Revolution, the West University underwent a broad institutional reform that created the necessary conditions for the resumption of study programs gradually abolished during the communist period.
After the 11 years of interruption, Aurel Breilean took an important step towards the re-establishment of a faculty in its own right, by founding the Art Pedagogy section within the Faculty of Letters. This was renamed the Faculty of Fine Arts, with painting, graphics, sculpture and decorative arts being added to the pedagogy. Breilean’s first term as dean from 1990 to 1996 was followed by Constantin Flondor (1996-1999), Dumitru Șerban (1999-2008) Adriana Lucaciu (2008-2012), Vică Tilă Adorian (2012-2019) and Camil Mihăescu (presently).
The Faculty of Arts and Design within the West University Timisoara has the mission to provide and develop the resources and tools necessary to carry out the specific educational process, scientific research and artistic creation at high quality standards, necessary to ensure competitiveness at national level, as well as in the European Higher Education and Research Area (defined by the Bologna, Copenhagen and Lisbon Declarations and promoted by the legislative complex on the National Strategy for Higher Education in Romania).
